Śaunaka asked: "O sūta! What was Indra's fault and how was he negligent? How was Gāruḍa born through the austerities of the vālakhilya-s?

How did the bird have the power to travel anywhere at will and summon up every power at will? If they are recounted in the ancient tales, I would like to know the answers to these questions.
पक्षी में अपनी इच्छानुसार कहीं भी यात्रा करने और अपनी इच्छानुसार प्रत्येक शक्ति को बुलाने की शक्ति कैसे आ गई? यदि इनका वर्णन प्राचीन कथाओं में किया जाए तो मैं इन प्रश्नों के उत्तर जानना चाहूँगा।
Sauti said: O Brāhmaṇa! What you wish to know is indeed narrated in the ancient tales. Listen to me, as I briefly recount it to you.
सौति ने कहा: हे ब्राह्मण! आप जो जानना चाहते हैं वह वास्तव में प्राचीन कथाओं में वर्णित है। मेरी बात सुनो, मैं इसे संक्षेप में तुम्हें बताता हूँ।
Prajāpati Kāśyapa undertook a sacrifice in order to have a son and it is said that he was helped by the riṣi-s, the gods and the gāndharva-s.
प्रजापति कश्यप ने पुत्र प्राप्ति के लिए यज्ञ किया और कहा जाता है कि ऋषियों, देवताओं और गंधर्वों ने उनकी मदद की थी।
Kāśyapa appointed Śākra, the other gods and the vālakhilya sages to bring firewood for the sacrifice.
कश्यप ने यज्ञ के लिए लकड़ी लाने के लिए शक्र, अन्य देवताओं और वाल्खिल्य ऋषियों को नियुक्त किया।
Because of his great strength, the lord Śākra picked up firewood that was as large as a mountain and carried it, without any effort at all.
अपनी महान शक्ति के कारण, भगवान शक्र ने बिना किसी प्रयास के पहाड़ जितनी बड़ी जलाऊ लकड़ी उठाई और उसे ले गए।
On the way, he saw some riṣi-s who were no larger than the joint of a thumb. Together, they carried a single leaf of a palāśa tree.
रास्ते में उन्होंने कुछ ऋषियों को देखा जिनका आकार अंगूठे के जोड़ से अधिक नहीं था। साथ में, वे पलाश के पेड़ का एक पत्ता ले गए।
The ascetics were extremely weak from lack of food and their bodies were lean. A cow's hoof had left a print and this had filled up with water, causing them grief.
भोजन के अभाव से तपस्वी अत्यंत दुर्बल हो गये थे और उनका शरीर दुबला-पतला हो गया था। गाय के खुर का निशान बन गया था और उसमें पानी भर गया था, जिससे उन्हें दुःख हुआ।

तांश्च सर्वान्स्मयाविष्टो वीर्योन्मत्तः पुरंदरः अवहस्यात्यगाच्छीघ्रं लङ्घयित्वावमन्य च
Vain about his valour, Purandara was amazed at this sight and contemptuously laughing at them swiftly passed over them, stepping over their heads.
अपनी वीरता के बारे में व्यर्थ, पुरंदर यह दृश्य देखकर चकित रह गए और उन पर तिरस्कारपूर्वक हंसते हुए तेजी से उनके ऊपर से गुजर गए, उनके सिर के ऊपर से पैर रखते हुए।
At this they were angered and began a great act that would bring danger to Śākra.
इस पर वे क्रोधित हो गए और एक महान कार्य शुरू कर दिया जिससे शक्र को खतरा हो सकता था।
According to the rites, these great sages, rigid in their austerities, poured libations into the sacrificial fire and chanted mantra-s saying,
अनुष्ठानों के अनुसार, इन महान ऋषियों ने, अपनी तपस्या में कठोर होकर, यज्ञ अग्नि में आहुतियाँ डालीं और मंत्रों का उच्चारण करते हुए कहा,
"The gods will have another Indra, capable of going anywhere at will and capable of summoning up any power at will. He will bring great fear to the present king of the gods.
"देवताओं के पास एक और इंद्र होगा, जो इच्छानुसार कहीं भी जाने में सक्षम होगा और इच्छानुसार किसी भी शक्ति को बुलाने में सक्षम होगा। वह देवताओं के वर्तमान राजा के लिए बहुत बड़ा भय लाएगा।
Through the fruits of our austerities, there will be born one, swift as the mind, who will be a hundred times better than Indra in strength and valour."
हमारी तपस्या के फल से, एक मन के समान तेज़ व्यक्ति पैदा होगा, जो ताकत और वीरता में इंद्र से सौ गुना बेहतर होगा।
On learning of this, Śatakratu, the king of the gods, was greatly alarmed and sought refuge with Kāśyapa, rigid in his vows.
यह जानने पर, देवताओं के राजा शतक्रतु बहुत चिंतित हुए और उन्होंने अपनी प्रतिज्ञा में कठोर होकर कश्यप की शरण ली।
Hearing everything from the king of the gods, Prajāpati Kāśyapa went to the vālakhilya-s and asked them if their act had been successful.
देवताओं के राजा से सब कुछ सुनकर, प्रजापति कश्यप वलाखिल्य के पास गए और उनसे पूछा कि क्या उनका कार्य सफल हुआ है।
The truthful ones replied that it had been. Then Prajāpati Kāśyapa pacified them and said,
सच्चे लोगों ने उत्तर दिया कि ऐसा हुआ था। तब प्रजापति कश्यप ने उन्हें शांत करते हुए कहा,

अयमिन्द्रस्त्रिभुवने नियोगाद्ब्रह्मणः कृतः इन्द्रार्थं च भवन्तोऽपि यत्नवन्तस्तपोधनाः
"O ones blessed with the power of austerities! The present Indra has been appointed by Brahmā as the lord of the three worlds. You are trying to create another Indra.
"हे तपस्या की शक्ति से धन्य लोगों! वर्तमान इंद्र को ब्रह्मा ने तीनों लोकों का स्वामी नियुक्त किया है। आप एक और इंद्र बनाने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं।

न मिथ्या ब्रह्मणो वाक्यं कर्तुमर्हथ सत्तमाः भवतां च न मिथ्यायं संकल्पो मे चिकीर्षितः
O supreme ones! You should not make Brahmā's words false. Nor should I make your intentions false.
हे परमपुरुषों! तुम्हें ब्रह्मा के वचनों को मिथ्या नहीं बनाना चाहिए। ना ही तेरे इरादे झूठे कर दूं.
Let there be another Indra for winged beings, endowed with great strength and valour. Show mercy to the king of the gods who is a supplicant before you."
पंखों वाले प्राणियों के लिए एक और इंद्र हो, जो महान शक्ति और वीरता से संपन्न हो। देवताओं के राजा पर दया दिखाओ, जो तुम्हारे सामने याचक है।"
Having been thus addressed by Kāśyapa, the vālakhilya ascetics saluted Kāśyapa, supreme among sages, and said,
कश्यप द्वारा इस प्रकार संबोधित किये जाने पर वाल्खिल्य तपस्वियों ने ऋषियों में श्रेष्ठ कश्यप को प्रणाम किया और कहा,
"O Prajāpati! Our act was for the purpose of creating an Indra. It is also something that you wish, because it was meant to bring you a son.
"हे प्रजापति! हमारा कार्य एक इंद्र को पैदा करने के उद्देश्य से था। यह भी कुछ ऐसा है जो आप चाहते हैं, क्योंकि इसका उद्देश्य आपके लिए एक पुत्र लाना था।
Please accept this act and its fruits. Do whatever seems to you to be the best course of action."
कृपया इस कृत्य और इसके फल को स्वीकार करें। जो भी तुम्हें सर्वोत्तम लगे वही करो।"

एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु देवी दाक्षायणी शुभा विनता नाम कल्याणी पुत्रकामा यशस्विनी
At that time, the beautiful and illustrious goddess Dākṣāyaṇī Vinatā desired to have a son.
उस समय, सुंदर और शानदार देवी दक्षिणायनी विनता को एक पुत्र की इच्छा हुई।
Having performed austerities and rites for the birth of a son and bathed, the pure one served her husband. Kāśyapa told her,
पुत्र प्राप्ति के लिए तपस्या और अनुष्ठान करके तथा स्नान करके पवित्रा ने अपने पति की सेवा की। कश्यप ने उससे कहा,
"O goddess! This act of yours will bear fruit and you will obtain what you desire. You will give birth to two valorous sons, lords of the three worlds.
"हे देवी! आपका यह कार्य फल देगा और आपको वह प्राप्त होगा जो आप चाहती हैं। आप तीन लोकों के स्वामी, दो वीर पुत्रों को जन्म देंगी।

तपसा वालखिल्यानां मम संकल्पजौ तथा भविष्यतो महाभागौ पुत्रौ ते लोकपूजितौ
Owing to the austerities of the vālakhilya-s and through my own desire, these sons will be extremely fortunate and will be worshipped in the worlds."
वलाखिल्यों की तपस्या और मेरी इच्छा से ये पुत्र अत्यंत भाग्यशाली होंगे और लोक में पूजे जायेंगे।"
Marīci's illustrious son again told her, "Take good care when you bear these auspicious seeds in your womb.
मारीचि के यशस्वी पुत्र ने उससे फिर कहा, "जब तुम अपने गर्भ में इन शुभ बीजों को धारण करो तो अच्छी तरह देखभाल करना।
He will be the king of all birds. He will be honoured by all the worlds. He will be a hero. He will be a bird who can assume any form at will.
वह सभी पक्षियों का राजा होगा। समस्त लोकों द्वारा उसका सम्मान किया जायेगा। वह एक हीरो होगा. वह एक पक्षी होगा जो इच्छानुसार कोई भी रूप धारण कर सकता है।
Pleased, Prajāpati then spoke to Śatakratu, "O Purandara! You will have two powerful birds as brothers.
प्रसन्न होकर, प्रजापति ने शतक्रतु से कहा, "हे पुरंदर! तुम्हारे भाई के रूप में दो शक्तिशाली पक्षी होंगे।
They will cause no injury to you. O Śākra! Stop worrying. You will continue to be Indra.
वे तुम्हें कोई चोट नहीं पहुँचाएँगे। हे शक्र! चिंता करना बंद करो. तुम इन्द्र ही बने रहोगे.

न चाप्येवं त्वया भूयः क्षेप्तव्या ब्रह्मवादिनः न चावमान्या दर्पात्ते वाग्विषा भृशकोपनाः
But in your arrogance, never insult those who have knowledge of the brāhman. Their words are like poison, their anger is fear some."
लेकिन अपने अहंकार में कभी भी उन लोगों का अपमान मत करना जिन्हें ब्रह्म का ज्ञान है। उनकी बातें ज़हर जैसी हैं, उनका गुस्सा कुछ लोगों का डर है।”
At these words, Indra's fears were dispelled and he went to his world. Vinatā was delighted, because her wishes had been fulfilled.
इन शब्दों से इंद्र का भय दूर हो गया और वह अपने लोक को चला गया। विनता प्रसन्न थी, क्योंकि उसकी इच्छाएँ पूरी हो गई थीं।
She gave birth to two sons, Aruṇā and Gāruḍa. Aruṇā, with the malformed body, became the one who comes before the sun.
उन्होंने अरुणा और गरुड़ नामक दो पुत्रों को जन्म दिया। अरुणा, विकृत शरीर के साथ, सूर्य के सामने आने वाली बन गई।
Gāruḍa was instated as the Indra of the birds. O descendant of the Bhṛgu lineage! Now listen to his great deeds.
गरुड़ को पक्षियों के इंद्र के रूप में प्रतिष्ठित किया गया था। हे भृगु वंश के वंशज! अब उनके महान कार्यों को सुनिये।
